Consumables


Consumables are scripted food and beverage items which can replenish your Hunger and Thirst need meters.
A food item with Nutrition value of +20 will decrease your Hunger by 20%.
A beverage item with Hydration value of +20 will decrease your Thirst by 20%.
Here are some example consumables with their values:

Donut: Nutrition +20

Short latte: Hydration +10; Toilet -10

Tall latte: Hydration +20; Toilet -20

Hunger
This is a basic need that is required for survival.
-
If the Hunger meter drops to 60%, your avatar's stomach will growl.
-
If the Hunger meter drops to 0%, your avatar will suffer health damage (if in damage-enabled zone) and the Health meter will start to drop. Eventually your avatar can die of starvation.
Consuming food will restore your avatar's Hunger meter.
If you have the Really Needy [CONSUME] script, you can drop it into your own food items to make it compatible with the Really Needy HUD.
You can configure if your scripted food item can only be consumed by your avatar or also by other avatars.
If your avatar is pregnant, the Hunger meter drops twice as fast.
If your avatar is sitting, the Hunger meter drops half as fast.
Some food items (for example, juicy fruits) can simultaneously satisfy Hunger and Thirst.

Design principles for the Hunger meter:

Too much urgency can be a bad thing. Hunger can provide the motivation for roleplay scenes - having to steal food, find work or allies to share food. The threat of starvation can create tension and a sense of urgency, but it should not be a constant grind where you are always looking for food, which would take the fun out of roleplaying. The default rate is set at a rather forgiving pace, though sim-owners can customise it to be faster if the sim is survival-themed.

Always hungry? In real life, when you eat a meal, you don't immediately start getting hungry again. There are games or HUDs where the Hunger meter starts dropping shortly after you fill it to 100%. While it is unrealistic, there are players who also wish to see the meter drop gradually rather than a chunk. To balance this, the Hunger meter drops gradually but the owner emotes (eg. "You are feeling hungry") only appear at 80%, 60%, 40%, 20%, 0% intervals of the meter.

Nutritional value. Some types of food may be more nutritious than other foods. Besides filling your stomach, it may take you longer before you get hungry again. To simulate this, it is possible for your Hunger meter to go beyond 100%.

Design principles for the Thirst meter:

Realistically, dehydration will kill you far faster than starvation. The Thirst meter should not be dropping at the same rate as the Hunger meter. Depending on climate and surroundings, humans can die from dehydration within a few days, but can last longer without food.

Caffeine and alcohol have diuretic effects. Hence beverages containing caffeine should decrease your Toilet meter even as they quench your Thirst. Alcoholic beverages will probably just decrease your Toilet meter without quenching your thirst.
Thirst
This is a basic need that is required for survival.

If the Thirst meter drops to 40%, your avatar will have chapped lips

If Thirst meter drops to 0%, your avatar will suffer health damage (if in damage-enabled zone) and Health meter will start to drop. Eventually your avatar can die of thirst.
Consuming water or beverages will restore Thirst meter.
If you have the Really Needy [CONSUME] script, you can drop it into your own beverage items to make it compatible with the Really Needy HUD.
You can configure if your scripted beverage item can only be consumed by your avatar or also by other avatars.
If your avatar is pregnant, the Thirst meter drops twice as fast.

Making your own Consumables
If you would like to make your own consumables which are compatible with the HUD, you can buy the [CONSUME] script, which can be used for restoring Hunger and Thirst.
You can buy a pack of 20 [CONSUME] scripts from my in-world store for L$20. (Reference on box sticker: C1). Each script is good for making a consumable with 1 feed.
To increase the number of feeds to 2, 3, 4 or 5, buy a box of 20 [FEED] scripts (reference on box sticker: F1) for L$80 and drop it inside your consumable object with the [CONSUME] script.
⚡ INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLING *Really Needy [CONSUME] v4.0 (C1) SCRIPT TO MAKE CONSUMABLE
❶ Preparing the configuration card
-
Create a notecard in your inventory. Rename it so that it starts with an asterisk * and is followed by the name of your object. For example if your object is named Yummy Burger, then name your notecard as *Yummy Burger

In the notecard, insert the line "TYPE 0" if it is food, or "TYPE 1" if it is a beverage. (Without the quotation marks, in capital letters)

TYPE 0 are items which will be found by the HUD if the user says "/eat". Main property of the item should be to restore Hunger

TYPE 1 are items which will be found by the HUD if the user says "/drink". Main property of the item should be to restore Thirst
-

Next insert the line "HUNGER 20" or "THIRST 20" to restore 20% of your Hunger or Thirst meter. Change the value as required.

Insert the line OWNERONLY if you want the item to be restricted to consumption by the owner only.

Save the notecard.
SAMPLE CONFIG CARD
If the user clicks on the item, it will show Nutrition: 20, which means the user can eat it to restore 20% of the Hunger meter.

This beverage can be drunk 5 times*, and each time will restore 20% of the Thirst meter. (Rule of thumb: 250ml of water = 20%)
❷ Preparing your food / beverage item

Right-click on your object and choose Edit. Go to the "Contents" tab of the Edit window.

Drop the configuration notecard you have prepared into the Contents of your object.

Drag the [CONSUME] script from your inventory into the Contents of the object.
At this point, your consumable has a Feed of 1 and can be consumed once. Optional: to add more feeds, read the next section.
❸ Using your Consumable

Wear your Really Needy HUD.
-
Type the command in chat or use the shortcut
-
For Type 0, say "/eat" within 10m of your object. (Or press F6 key on your keyboard if the gesture is activated).

For Type 1, say "/drink" within 10m of your object. (Or press F7 key on your keyboard if the gesture is activated).

Click on your object and your avatar's Hunger/Thirst meter should be restored.

⚡ MAKING CONSUMABLES WITH MULTIPLE FEEDS

Drag the [FEEDS] script (sold separately) from your inventory into your consumable which contains the [CONSUME] script (C1). This increases the maximum allowed number of Feeds stored in the object to 5. The script will self-delete after updating your object.

In the configuration notecard, insert the line "FEEDS 5" to allow the food/beverage to be consumed 5 times. (Change the value to a lower number than 5 if you like).
- Save the config notecard. The [CONSUME] script should reset itself and read the config notecard again. You should see a message "➤ FEEDS initialised as 5".
⚠ If you drop the [FEEDS] script into an object which has not been installed with the [CONSUME] script before hand, it will not work.
⚠ If you move the [CONSUME] script out of the object after you have added the feeds, the feeds remain with the object, but the object cannot be
consumed without the [CONSUME] script.
ADVANCED CONFIGURATION PARAMETERS
These are additional configuration options available for advanced users to make Consumables.
The following parameters are new in version 4.0:
CONSUME_ON_HOLD, ANIMATION_CONSUME, ANIMATION_HOLD, CONSUME_DURATION, STEAM ON, STEAM OFF.

Item can be consumed by clicking on it with left-mouse button and holding for ~1 second
without needing to say /eat or /drink.
Item can be consumed by touching it without needing to say /eat or /drink.
Item can be consumed by attaching it without needing to say /eat or /drink.
Item would set itself to a z-position 1cm higher when rezzed to table/ground.
Change the value as required.
Item would set itself to a rotation of <x,y,z> when rezzed to table/ground.
Change the x, y, and z values as required.
Item would set itself to a rotation of <x,y,z> when attached.
Change the x, y, and z values as required.
Item would set itself to a position of <x,y,z> when attached.
Change the x, y, and z values as required.
When item is attached, this animation will be played (animation need to be put into Contents of item). Change anim1_name to the name of your animation as required.
When attached item is consumed, this animation will be played (animation need to be put into Contents of item). Change anim2_name to the name of your animation as required.
When attached item is consumed, the above animation (anim2_name) will be played for 10.6 seconds.This simulates the process of eating so that it doesn't vanish instantly upon consumption.
Change the value to the duration you want to play the animation, as required.
Turns on steam particles.
Turns off steam particles.
The last 5 parameters in the list above enable you to make a consumable with your own holding and eating/drinking animation without needing to include an object attachment & animation script or script for adding steam to your item.
